Masaba Inc., a manufacturer of mining equipment, relocated its operation from Akron, Iowa to Vermillion, S.D. a move which has created over 80 jobs in the past three years. Masaba originally constructed a 100,000 sq. ft. facility and has recently added an additional 60,000 sq. ft.

"The availability of a labor market was a key issue for our company, and the local and state support to pull together as a team effort in Masaba's relocation has made the difference in our decision to move to Vermillion SD," says CEO Jerad Higman. The states comprehensive financing package along with the local tax incentives and job creation programs sealed the deal when discussing other state alternatives. On a personal note, "the University of South Dakota's educational, cultural and athletic programs were a huge attraction to my family, as well as to the families of our employees."

Polaris Industries expanded its distribution center in Vermillion, South Dakota by fifty percent in 2008. Previously, the parts, garments, and accessories distribution center in Vermillion was 256,000 sq. ft. This addition added 128,000 sq. ft. more. Polaris chose the college community as a warehouse location because of its available labor force and central location to the company's customer base.

"We expanded in Vermillion because of the low cost of doing business in the state, the flexibility of the workforce, as well as our 11 year commitment to the community. The community has been supportive of the efforts and activities of Polaris Industries and the University of South Dakota has been an outstanding source of part-time and temp labor."
