A Ground Breaking Ceremony for SDN Communications is Thurs., Sept. 9th at 4:30 pm at the Vermillion High School. SDN provides diverse telecommunication services and plans to increase broadband access to 305 schools, government facilities and public safety offices, and hospitals in more than 75 communities in the state. Vermillion is one of the first communities to receive the improved telecommunications infrastructure. The VCDC has worked closely with SDN to obtain the appropriate site and land easements to complete this project. Please join them at the High School for hors d'oeuvres and refreshments in celebration!

Chamber Day with the Coyotes - Join your fellow Chamber members at a tailgate party to help kick off the 2010 Coyote Football season. The VCDC and Coyote Athletics are partnering for Vermillion Chamber Day at the Sept. 18th home opener. The Coyotes are offering Chamber members price tickets to the game and the VCDC will be hosting a tailgate party and member social in the new tailgate area at the Dakota Dome. Come to the pre-game tailgate to socialize with your fellow members even if you can't attend the game. For ticket information, contact the VCDC at 624-5571. Festivities begin around 2:00 (kick-off is at 4:05).

The Vermillion Area Community Foundation
is accepting proposals for projects to improve our community. Forms for submitting proposals by groups or organizations are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. While funds available are limited we can fully fund small one time requests or partially fund larger projects. Your annual donations to our Foundation will provide us with increasing funds each year for worthwhile projects.

2010 Tanager Volunteer Day
is Tues., Sept. 14th. Businesses, schools, organizations, churches, clubs, etc. are encouraged to challenge our students as they can accomplish many things in a short time. Our students enjoy cleaning, painting, vacuuming, planting trees, scrapping paint, office tasks, shredding, or almost any task you need completed. The Tanagers are planning on a full day of work starting shortly after 8:30 am and ending at 3:30 pm. *2010 Nikki's Fund 5K Run/Walk - September 11, 2010 at 9:00 am in Prentis Park. This event is in honor of Nikki Harris, and all of those that have been affected by suicide/depression. Nikki's Fund was started by Nikki's mother, Janine Harris, who lost her daughter to suicide. Since then she has been on a mission to promote Suicide Prevention Awareness to USD, the Vermillion community, and other surrounding communities. The goal of Nikki's Fund is to raise money for students that cannot afford medicine while battling depression and other health issues, and promoting suicide prevention. Vermillion Public Library will again be offering patrons the opportunity to participate in One Book South Dakota, a program begun in 2003 that encourages people from across the state to read and discuss the same book. This year, participants will be reading and discussing What is the What by Dave Eggers. *Charmaine White Face will speak about "The Impact of Uranium Mining on South Dakota," Tues., Sept.21, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. in the Freedom Forum Conference Room, Al Neuharth Center, University of South Dakota, in Vermillion. Central to her message is that all of us are threatened by radioactive waste. Radioactive dust is carried by the wind and interconnected waterways, and toxic poisons in the soil work their way into the mainstream food chain. The Living River Group Sierra Club and the South Dakota Humanities Council are sponsoring the lecture/discussion.
